Portuguese Pension Life Certificate From Australia
Table of contents
If you receive a Portuguese Social Security pension in Australia, the annual Prova de Vida (proof of life) applies to you from 2027. In 2026 it covered only pensioners in seven other countries. The easiest route is the digital check on the Portuguese Social Security portal or app, which needs no notary. A signed paper certificate is the alternative.
Key takeaways
- The Prova de Vida confirms that old-age, disability and survivor pensioners living abroad still qualify for their Portuguese pension.
- In 2026 it applied only to pensioners aged 66 years and 9 months or more living in Belgium, Cape Verde, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, the UK, Switzerland and Canada. From 2027 it applies to every pensioner abroad, including in Australia.
- The 2026 window ran from 1 May to 15 September, with pensions suspended from November if it was not done.
- The digital route uses facial recognition and can be done without logging in to the portal.
- For the paper route, Portuguese Social Security lists notaries, courts, civil registries, local authorities and consulates, among others, as entities that can sign the certificate.
Do pensioners in Australia need a Prova de Vida yet?
Not in 2026, but from 2027 they will. Portuguese Social Security introduced the mandatory Prova de Vida in stages. Its practical guide, published 8 July 2026, says that in 2026 it applied to pensioners with a registered address in Belgium, Cape Verde, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Switzerland and Canada, aged 66 years and 9 months or older. In 2027, it applies to all pensioners living abroad, whatever their age or country of residence.
The guide also gives a simple test: the Prova de Vida option appears in the personal area of the Portuguese Social Security portal only for pensioners who are covered. If the option is not there, you do not need to do it. It also says the obligation starts from the year after your pension begins to be paid, or after you move abroad.
That gives pensioners in Australia a useful head start. The time to sort out a Portuguese Social Security login, check your contact details and try the digital check is before the first round that applies to you, not during it.
When is the window, and what if you miss it?
In 2026 the window ran from 1 May to 15 September, and Portuguese Social Security said pensions would be suspended from November 2026 for anyone who had not done it, resuming only once a valid Prova de Vida was submitted. The dates for 2027 had not been published in the guide we checked. Do not assume they will match 2026; check the portal or the latest guide when the year begins.
The guide says pensioners are told in one of two ways. If you are registered and have logged in to the portal within the past two years, you are notified through the portal's message box. If you are not registered, or have not logged in for more than two years, a letter goes to the address held by Portuguese Social Security. That is a good reason to make sure your Australian address is up to date.
How does the digital Prova de Vida work?
Portuguese Social Security recommends the digital route because it is quicker and avoids travel. It uses biometric checking: the photo on your identity document is compared with your face, captured live by the camera. You can do it on the Portuguese Social Security portal or in its app.
| Digital option | What you need | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| With a login | Your Social Security user details, with your mobile number and email up to date | The proof linked to your account, and receipts and status you can check |
| Without a login | An email address for a validation code, your NISS (Social Security number) and date of birth | The proof itself, with no access to the rest of your account |
Both are accepted. For the identity document, the guide lists a Portuguese Citizen Card, a Portuguese Identity Card or a passport. It recommends good light, a flat surface and keeping the document inside the frame on screen, and takes photos of the document's front and back and of your face.
If you have only an Australian passport, check that the portal accepts it before the window opens. The digital route usually needs no notary, no appointment and no postage, which matters from the other side of the world.
Who can sign the paper certificate in Australia?
If you cannot use the digital route, the documentary route uses the Certificado de Prova de Vida, completed and signed by an authorised entity. The guide lists four groups, and says that for most of them both Portuguese and foreign entities count:
- Portuguese Social Security, equivalent social security bodies, embassies and consulates
- notaries, courts and civil registries
- local authorities
- a health establishment where you are an inpatient
From Australia, the clearest choices on that list are the Portuguese embassy or a consulate, and an Australian notary. The list also mentions foreign equivalents of social security bodies and foreign local authorities, but Australian bodies rarely certify foreign pension forms, so ask before relying on one. A notary confirms your identity and that you appeared in person, which is what the certificate needs; they do not certify anything they have not seen. For what a notary can and cannot do, see what a notary public does.
Once the certificate is signed, the guide describes submitting it through your personal area on the portal, by uploading it as a JPEG, PDF or PNG file, or through a Social Security service point, an embassy or a consulate.
Can you do it in person?
Yes. The in-person route means attending yourself at a Portuguese embassy or consular service, or at a social security attaché's office where one exists. If the in-person proof is not recorded on the portal straight away, you are given a receipt at the appointment. From Australia, distance is the main drawback, so the digital route or a notary is usually more practical.
Does the certificate need an apostille or translation?
The practical guide does not ask for one. It describes the certificate being signed by an authorised entity and uploaded or handed in. If Portuguese Social Security asks for more in your case, follow its instructions. Only DFAT issues apostilles in Australia; an apostille confirms the signature and seal on a document, never its contents. Portugal's status is shown on the HCCH status table. Do not pay for an apostille before checking whether the digital route would do.
How do you prepare for your first Prova de Vida from Australia?
- Find your NISS, your Portuguese Social Security identification number, on your pension letters.
- Update your contact details, including your Australian address, mobile number and email.
- Register on the Portuguese Social Security portal if you can, so notices reach your portal inbox.
- Check your identity document. Make sure it is valid, and that the portal accepts it.
- When the window opens, look for the Prova de Vida option in your personal area and do the digital check.
- If the digital check is not possible, have the Certificado de Prova de Vida signed by a consulate or notary, and upload it.
- Keep the receipt and a copy of anything you submitted.
What else should you keep up to date?
The guide says pensioners should keep their details current, especially their address and how the pension is paid. It adds one Portuguese-specific point: if you hold a Portuguese Citizen Card, a change of address must be made through the Citizen Card services or a consulate, not only with Social Security. Questions about entitlement or tax belong with Portuguese Social Security or an adviser, not a notary. For other foreign pension paperwork, see foreign pension documents and notaries.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Doing nothing in 2027 because nothing was needed in 2026. The rule widens to every pensioner abroad.
- Letting the address go stale. Notices go by post to the address held if you do not use the portal.
- Paying for a notary first. The digital route is free and recommended.
- Assuming the 2027 dates match 2026. Check them when the year begins.
- Using a certifier outside the list without asking first.
- Forgetting the Citizen Card when you change address.
Here is an illustration, not a real case.
A retired couple in Adelaide receive a Portuguese survivor pension and an old-age pension. Nothing arrived in 2026, and when they log in to the portal, there is no Prova de Vida option in their personal area, which the guide says means none is needed yet. Knowing it will apply from 2027, they update their Australian address and email, confirm their NISS numbers, and check that the portal accepts their passports. When the 2027 window opens, both do the digital check at home, with no notary involved.
In short
Portugal's Prova de Vida did not cover pensioners in Australia in 2026, but it covers every pensioner abroad from 2027. The digital check on the portal or app, with or without a login, is free and recommended. If you cannot use it, have the Certificado de Prova de Vida signed by a consulate or a notary and upload it. Keep your address current, because a missed check can suspend the pension. Our guide to proof of life certificates covers other countries, and our document notarisation page covers the notary route.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a Portuguese Prova de Vida if I live in Australia?
Not in 2026, when it covered only pensioners in seven other countries. Portuguese Social Security says that from 2027 it applies to every pensioner living abroad, whatever their age or country. Check your portal personal area when the 2027 window opens.
When is the Portuguese Prova de Vida due?
In 2026 the window ran from 1 May to 15 September. The 2027 dates were not yet in the guide we checked, so confirm them on the Portuguese Social Security portal when the year begins.
What happens if I miss the Prova de Vida?
The pension is suspended. For 2026, Portuguese Social Security said suspension would start in November for anyone who missed the window, and payment would resume only after a valid Prova de Vida.
Can I do the Prova de Vida without a login?
Yes. The digital check can be done without authentication, using an email address for a validation code, your NISS and your date of birth, and facial recognition. Both the login and no-login routes are accepted.
Can an Australian notary sign the Portuguese certificate?
Portuguese Social Security lists notaries, including foreign ones, among the entities that can sign the Certificado de Prova de Vida. Consulates, courts, civil registries and local authorities are also listed. The digital route usually avoids the need for a notary at all.
Does the Portuguese certificate need an apostille?
The practical guide does not ask for one. It describes the signed certificate being uploaded to the portal or handed in. Follow any further instructions Portuguese Social Security gives you, but do not pay for an apostille it has not requested.
How will I be told when to do it?
By the portal's message box if you are registered and have logged in within the past two years. Otherwise, by letter to the address held by Portuguese Social Security, so keep your Australian address up to date.
Which identity documents does the digital check accept?
The guide lists a Portuguese Citizen Card, a Portuguese Identity Card or a passport. If you hold only an Australian passport, check that the portal accepts it before the window opens.
I am in hospital. Who can sign my certificate?
The guide includes a health establishment where the pensioner is an inpatient among the entities that can sign the Certificado de Prova de Vida. A consulate or a notary who attends by arrangement are other options.
When does the obligation start for a new pensioner?
From the year after your pension begins to be paid, or after you move abroad. Look for the Prova de Vida option in your portal personal area; if it is not there, you do not need to do it yet.
