Mackay is a long way from Brisbane, and Brisbane is where Queensland's DFAT counter is. For most people here, the realistic route is a notary in the region, or a JP if that is all the document needs, and then DFAT by post. This guide also explains "attestation", a word many people search for that means something specific.
Mackay is the centre of the Mackay Regional Council area. The council runs customer service centres in Mackay, Mirani and Sarina. Queensland's tourism body places the wider Mackay region midway between Brisbane and Cairns, with 200 km of coastline from St Lawrence in the south to Midge Point in the north, and inland to Clermont. It describes the region's heritage as rooted in sugar cane, mining, beef and agriculture.
Mining shows up clearly in the Census. In 2021, coal mining was the largest industry of employment for residents of the Mackay urban area, at 8.8% of working people, against 1.1% across Queensland. The urban area had 80,455 residents. The largest overseas birthplaces were New Zealand, England, the Philippines, South Africa and India. The most common languages at home other than English were Tagalog, Afrikaans, Filipino, Mandarin and Punjabi.
People who have dealt with Indian, Gulf or other overseas authorities often ask for "attestation" of a document. In Australia there is no single attestation service. The request usually breaks into steps:
Check the destination's status on the HCCH table on the day you apply, and ask the receiving authority exactly which steps it wants.
The Society of Notaries of Queensland has a nearest-notary search on its website. The Society says Queensland notaries are appointed by the Archbishop of Canterbury through the Court of Faculties in England. Bring the original document and photo ID.
For DFAT, the in-person option is the Australian Passport Office in Brisbane, by appointment only, and someone else can lodge for you. From Mackay, most people use registered post: send the documents to DFAT's Authentications Section at its Melbourne or Sydney GPO box (addresses on Smartraveller), with a completed request form, card authorisation and a self-addressed registered post envelope. DFAT returns incomplete postal requests unprocessed and does not publish a fixed turnaround.
Translations for Australian agencies should be done by a NAATI-certified translator. The NAATI Online Directory is searchable by language, and the translator does not need to be local.
Queensland's Justices of the Peace and Commissioners for Declarations witness documents and certify copies for Australian purposes, free of charge. The Queensland Government's search tool finds them at shopping centres, libraries and courts, and some eligible documents can be witnessed online by audio-visual link. For certified copies going to the Department of Home Affairs, a JP is usually enough.
A JP or Cdec cannot certify documents for use overseas, and DFAT will not apostille their signatures.
Is there a notary public in Mackay? We do not list individual notaries. Use the Society of Notaries of Queensland's search.
Can a lawyer in Mackay "attest" my documents? Only a notary can notarise, and only DFAT can legalise. Many notaries are lawyers, but not every lawyer is a notary.
Where is the nearest place to get an apostille? DFAT at the Brisbane passport office, by appointment, or by registered post.
Is a cheap notary public an option? Notary fees vary. For Australian purposes, a JP is free and often sufficient.
